DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Fulvia Gennari (University of Pisa\, Department of P
hysics)\nIn recent years\, hazelnut cultivation is becoming increasingly i
mportant in terms of areas invested and crops\nexpected. Among the various
quality defects\, one of the most detrimental alterations to hazelnut qua
lity is “cimiciato”\ndefect\, which is caused by a group of insects be
longing to the families of Coreidae and Pentatomidae. Nowadays no\nreliabl
e automatic method to discriminate between healthy and cimiciato hazelnuts
exists and the food industry still\nrelies on manual visual inspection of
shelled nuts.\n\nThe aim of this work was to validate a continuous-wave t
 erahertz transmission imaging system to\ndiscriminate cimiciato-infected h
azelnuts by a non-invasive method that can\, potentially\, be implemented
in a realtime approach. Carrying low-energy photons\, THz radiation is una
ble to induce ionization processes\, which means\nthat it is a perfectly s
afe radiation for biological tissues.\n\nThe trial was conducted on a samp
le of 150 hazelnuts. We set up a classification model and to assess its\np
erformance we used a validation sample of 50 hazelnuts. We plotted the dis
tributions of the healthy and injured\nsamples and fitted the two curves w
ith a polynomial function. The data from each unknown nut was added as a n
ew\ndata point to each of the two distributions\, and the minimum distance
between this new point and the fitting function\nwas calculated. The new
data point was\, then\, assigned to the distribution with the lowe r dista
nce and the\ncorrect/incorrect attribution was evaluated by visual inspect
ion of the nuts. The procedure was able to correctly\nidentify 100% of cim
iciato hazelnuts in the mixed population with still a 25% false negative r
ate.\n\nThe developed method is simple\, requires a low-cost apparatus and
can potentially be implemented in real time\,\ntherefore\, it can be of g
reat interest for the food industry\n\nhttps://indico.unina.it/event/75/co
